Czech number one, Petra Kvitova, got the better of the Russian star, Maria Kirilenko, in straight sets at the New Haven Open at Yale 2012 on Saturday. She notched up a 7-6(9), 7-5 victory over the Russian to grab her second WTA (Women’s Tennis Association)
title in three weeks at this Premier event held in Connecticut, United States.
The former Wimbledon champion recreated her magic at the Emirates Airline US Open Series tournaments and not only clinched the series but captured second year-to-date title.
Kvitova made a sloppy entry at the Connecticut Tennis Center. She warded off a set point in the opening set tie-breaker and bounced back from 2-5 down in the second set to carve out the victory.
The Czech stated in a post match press conference:
"In the tie-break I just played point by point – I wasn’t thinking about the score. In the end it was pretty close and I’m really glad I won it. After that, I was down physically, without energy. It seemed like I was walking, not running. I made a lot of
mistakes and went 5-2 down – but then I tried not to think about my shots or tactics and started putting the ball into the court more. Then it was 7-5. I was surprised."
After stealing the show, the Czech gained confidence boost for the US Open, last of the four Grand Slam events held in Queens, in New York City, United States.
"It’s unbelievable – I played three tournaments in a row and won two," Kvitova said. "I’ve played a lot of matches and I’m feeling more relaxed and confident on the court. I hope all of this will continue into the US Open next week."
