In what appeared to be a positive development in the deadlock between judiciary and executive, Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf has directed leaders from the Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) to stop giving remarks and making statements against the judiciary.

The premier, who appeared in the Supreme Court over the show-cause notice issued against him for contempt of court, asked his party to must respect the judicial institutions.

After his appearance, he held a sitting with federal minister and leaders from allied parties.

The participants discussed the today’s hearing in detail in which PM Ashraf directed his cabinet members to show respect and honor for the judiciary.

He was of the opinion that the leaders from ruling party should not show disrespect and criticize judiciary, particularly the apex court, in television talks shows.

The prime minister also issued directives to other party members to refrain from making statements against the Supreme Court.

PM Ashraf observed, “Statements and remarks that may reflect a confrontation between the government and the judiciary should not be made.

In the meantime, the ministers and coalition leaders present during the meeting appreciated the prime minister’s stance in the court.

Earlier, Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf appeared to the Supreme Court, seeking more time to settle the issue of Swiss letter with amicably.

He observed, “I am only a political worker not a lawyer, I need to understand the case in order to resolve it. I don’t want to stretch out the case and I merely want to find a good solution for it. I promise to find a realistic solution to solve the case”.

Raja Pervez Ashraf has requested the court to retract the show-cause notice issued against him.

He was of the opinion that he needs time to consult a legal expert with reference to the show-cause notice issued to him on August 8.

The hearing into the NRO implementation case has been adjourned till September 18 and PM Ashraf was directed to personally appear on next hearing.

Sending a PM home was not a small thing, especially for a country that has gained its democratic footing after a long, tough and persistent struggle, losing some of its finest leaders in the process. No more is the NRO implementation case seen as a purely legal matter. Even in legal circles hitherto supporting the judiciary to the hilt, opinion is veering towards criticism of the judiciary’s ‘activism’ and judicial restraint is being advised. This is doing little for the stature, respect and dignity of the judiciary. The worst case scenario could have led to anti-democratic forces taking advantage of the situation but the maturity shown by the government and increasingly the restraint creeping into the SC bench’s approach raises hopes that both sides will indeed seek a middle path that does not damage the reputation and standing of either while bringing relief to an already tense and crisis-ridden country.
