Samsung wronged Apple on patents, the evidence was convincing, says juror Manuel Ilagan – Part 1
Monday, August 27th, 2012 4:36:05 by Usman KhalidDetails have started to pour in as the Apple-Samsung case start to attract spotlight. One of the jurors in the case hearings, Manuel Ilagan, spoke to CNet, one of the world’s leading technology news source to shed some light on the verdict that saw some opprobrium from legal and tech gurus.
Ilagan, one of the nine jurors, was present in all the hearings and the debates that took place during the finalization of the final verdict. While speaking to CNet, Ilagan said that the jury did not come up with the final decision in a hurry, in fact every decision had a debate and sometimes they took heat in the process.
“We didn’t rush,” he said during the interview. We had a debate before we made a decision. Sometimes it was getting heated.”
Apple filed a patent infringement case against Samsung in April and the court proceedings started three weeks ago. The case was presided by Judge Lucy Koh at the District Court of San Jose, Northern California, roughly 8 miles away from Apple’s Cupertino-based headquarters.
Apple had sued Samsung’s 28 mobile devices, including both smartphones and tablets, in infringement of 7 of its registered patents. The jury took the decision in favour of Apple on most counts and penalized Samsung with more than a billion dollars.
Apple was countersued by the Korean electronics giants on infringement of some of its patents and asked for $421 Million in damages. However, the jury found Apple not guilty on any of the counts and fined Apple with $0.
Ilagan said the case was quite difficult to take on and piles of evidence was difficult to digest at once. However, once seen the basic idea behind some of the infringements, it was easy to go on and pass the verdict. The jury debated over every one of the counts in details.
