Aftab Sherpao had submitted his bail application on Monday and today the court granted him interim bail against a surety of one million rupees and adjourned the hearing till Sept 3.
While requesting for the bail in the Akbar Bugti murder case, the former minister appeared before a two-member bench comprising Justice Jamal Mandokhel and Justice Ghulam Mustafa Mengal in person.
As the hearing began on the case today, Professor Mohammad Umer Farooq, the counsel for Aftab Sherpao maintained that his client had no knowledge about Bugti’s murder, in fact, he said, he came to know about the unfortunate incident
through the media reports.
At this point, Aftab told the court that he was named in the FIR only because he was a part of the then federal cabinet.
Talking to the media men after the hearing, Sherpao said that he had no role in the military operation that culminated in murder of the Baloch Sardar. He further said that whatever took place at that time, it happened at the behest
of the then provincial government.
Adding to his comments, Sherpao said that Bugti was a great leader and that the problem could not be solved by killing anyone.
Jamil Bugti, Nawab Akbar Bugti’s son and the complainant in the case, while registering the FIR, had named the then president General ® Pervez Musharraf, then prime minister Shaukat Aziz, then Balochistan governor Owais Ghani,
then interior minister Aftab Sherpao, then Balochistan chief minister Jam Yousuf and then provincial home minister Shoaib Nausherwani.
Nawab Akbar Bugti was killed in a military operation on August 26, 2006.
