The Population Council received the inaugural Service to the Community Award from InsideNGO at last week’s Annual Conference, a gathering of more than 900 international NGO professionals in Washington, DC. The award recognizes a member organization
that plays an active leadership role in InsideNGO and the NGO operations community. It was announced during the conference awards ceremony, earlier this month.
"The Population Council addresses some of the world’s most challenging problems with innovation, knowledge, and a strong collaborative spirit—characteristics they have brought to the NGO community over the years," said InsideNGO
executive director Alison Smith. "Today’s award honors and thanks the Population Council for their exceptional leadership and support throughout InsideNGO’s 35-year history."
In her remarks at the ceremony, Smith made special note of the Council’s contributions across InsideNGO: Council staff members routinely serve as workshop, roundtable, and Annual Conference trainers, presenters, and technical experts,
and many have served on InsideNGO advisory councils. Key Population Council leadership has also served on its board of directors.
"I’m honored to accept this award on behalf of all current and former Population Council staff members who have made contributions to InsideNGO and the development of our community over the years," said Jim Sailer, Population Council
vice president and InsideNGO board member. "Thanks to InsideNGO, the international NGO community has a gathering place where operational excellence and professional expertise come together to help change the world."
In addition to the Service to the Community Award, the Council received special recognition at the conference for the work of its Global Information Technology Team, which was noted for operational excellence with an Honorable
Mention Award in the IT awards category.
InsideNGO is a collaborative community that strengthens the operational and management capacity of the international development and relief nonprofit community in the pursuit of global development. The organization is based on
the premise that inside every international relief or development NGO there are core professionals—in Information Technology, Human Resources, Grants and Contracts, and other key areas—who provide the structure and expertise to support the reach and impact
of their organization. InsideNGO is dedicated to strengthening those operational teams and fostering leadership in the international nonprofit sector.
The Population Council is working in Pakistan since 1958 and established a permanent office in Islamabad in 1992. Its primary relationship within the Government of Pakistan is with the Health and
Population sectors and it is currently doing research on various reproductive health, population, and education issues pertinent to Pakistan.
