Urging the international community for giving market access to Pakistan, President Asif Ali Zardari has said that it was time for it to help those countries most adversely impacted by the war on terror.

In his view, preferential treatment and greater market access for Pakistani products would help the country in establishing its economy.

While addressing a gathering, the president said the ongoing war against militancy has inflicted huge damage to the country’s economy.

He observed, “On account of the sacrifices and suffering on behalf of the international community in the war against terror, Pakistan is entitled to preferential treatment and greater market access”.

He was of the opinion that tremendous cost of the war against terror had put a great stress on Pakistan’s economy, adding that huge economic cost of the war compelled the government to curtail its Public Sector Development Programs.

President Zardari asserted that trade would also help in removing the negative perceptions of developing countries that the militants disseminate.

He said, “The principal reason for decline in Pakistan’s export earnings was due to its increasingly becoming non- competitive. The international buyers, entrepreneurs and technicians were shying away from coming to Pakistan due to ongoing fight against militancy”.

The president continued that Pakistan’s position in the world of textile market which was the symbol of the country’s manufacturing excellence was being adversely impacted and it was being reduced from principal suppliers to back up suppliers.

He urged the international community to urgently help the country in getting more trade opportunities for Pakistan.

He noted, “We have asked the US and European Union countries to give us market access as greater market access will create employment opportunities and will wean away the frustrated jobless youth from joining the extremists and militants”.

Taking credit of the reforms, President Zardari said the incumbent introduced the policy of private-public partnership as this was important for the rapid growth of the country.

At the same time, he offered incentives and facilities to the local and foreign investors.

He was of the opinion that the products Pakistan produced could be freely exported to the regional markets.
