Top seeds in both men and women’s draw of the US Open assertively advanced into the second round at the US Open 2012, last of the four Grand Slam events held in Queens in New York City, United States.
World number one Victoria Azarenka slaughtered Russia’s Alexandra Panova with a bagel. She easily swiped her entire serves and cashed in five out of six break chances to formulate a 6-0, 6-1 victory.
The third seed, Maria Sharapova, also eased past her rival, Melinda Czink from Hungary, in straight sets in 67 minutes. She lost her serve once but cashed in half of the eight break chances to prevail.
"I was just happy to be back playing a competitive match. It’s been a few weeks," Sharapova reflected after conquering the Hungarian. "I went to Montréal and was supposed to practice and play the next day, but I woke up and wasn’t feeling really good from
a stomach bug I’d had for a few days. They said I should just rest. I just went home and took Cincinnati off as well. I think it was just a sign I needed a few weeks off."
The former world number one captured the title at Flushing Meadows in 2006 but failed to reach quarters after that.
Another former world number one, Kim Clijsters from Belgium, also stole the show later that day. She crippled the local wild card entrant, Victoria Duval, with a breadstick to progress.
The ecstatic Clijsters asked the wild card recipient to take a photo with her after the match. She stated: "She’s so sweet – she’s a very nice girl. It’s a great memory for me as well to be in the position I was in, playing somebody who followed me for most
of my career. It was nice for me as well."
The Belgian top ranked star has conquered this event on the last three times she played it, in 2005, 2009 and 2010.
