Militants killed nine soldiers in South Waziristan
Wednesday, August 29th, 2012 4:23:32 by Faisal FarooqIn yet another severe cross border assault, Taliban insurgents on Wednesday attacked a Pakistani military post near the Afghan border, killing at least nine soldiers.
Although the military killed ten insurgents in retaliation, it was a reminder of a threat posed by assailants.
According to the reports, over twenty Taliban insurgents have attacked security check post in Tyarza area of South Waziristan during the wee hours of Wednesday.
Reports are claiming nine causalities while the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) confirmed only loss of six lives in the ambush.
Claiming the responsibility soon after the attack, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) said that they had killed at least a dozen soldiers.
TTP spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan while talking to the media stated, “We have killed more than a dozen soldiers in South Waziristan. Some of the soldiers have been beheaded”.
The reports of the death toll could not be confirmed from independent sources. However, the search operation of security forces is underway in the area.
South Waziristan was once the main stronghold for the Pakistani Taliban. The military launched a large offensive against militants there in 2009, but insurgents still operate in the area and periodically stage attacks.
Pakistan Army has numerous operations against the Pakistani Taliban in six of the seven areas that make up country’s self-governing tribal region bordering with Afghanistan.
Washington is pushing regularly Islamabad to an operation against the Pakistani Taliban in the last major militant sanctuary in region, North Waziristan.
However, the army has understated the comments saying they plan to slowly increase pressure against militants in North Waziristan rather than launch a sweeping offensive.
Many Pakistani Taliban militants fled to North Waziristan and other parts of the tribal region following the army operation in South Waziristan in 2009.
