Lenovo eyes Japan as its key market, holds the top spot in the world’s 3rd largest PC market
Friday, August 31st, 2012 4:43:22 by Usman KhalidChinese PC maker Lenovo has stated that it aims a 30 percent market share in Japanese market. The underlying PC market is the third largest in the world and the makers of ThinkPad have a strong hold in the area.
Currently Lenovo held a fraction above 25 percent share, in the second fiscal quarter, of the Japanese PC market in a joint venture with the local company NEC. Both joined hands in Japan last year in a joint agreement worth $175 Million.
The 25 percent market share is around 2 percent increment to the grab that both companies held combined last year in the same quarter.
Roderick Lappin, Lenovo NEC’s executive chairman, was quoted in a story in a newspaper as saying that Japan, the world’s third-biggest PC market, will become a critical part of Lenovo’s future global strategy. The company has openly said that Japan would be its main target for the reason that is third largest in the world and also one of the fastest growing.
Although both companies have products marketed under joint brand name, they also have the leeway to sell their products separately in Japan.
Lenovo has been running a hot streak for the last one year. It surpassed Dell in the race for the top PC maker to grab the second position in global rating. Dell has been going through some tough times as the company seeks restructuring of its corporate model.
In India, Dell lost its top spot as the PC makers to Lenovo, with Hewlett-Packard trailing closely. However, HP still resides atop in the list of top global PC makers, but according to analysts Lenovo’s fast growth rate has narrowed down the margin to almost 0.7 percent and by the end of this year they will snatch the spot from HP.
