Australia’s Thomas Woods, Brazil’s Ricardo Ferreira and his fellow countryperson Alexandre Chacon made the Round 2 (Round of 96) cut at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star San Miguel Pro Zarautz after claiming top honours in their respective Round 1 (Round of 144) heats that went down at Zarautz in Basque Country, Spain, on Tuesday, August 28.

Morocco’s Ramzi Boukhiam, Australia’s Daniel Karren and his compatriot Soli Bailey qualified for the next round as well following their runner-up finish.

The opening day of the competition saw clean one-to-two foot waves breaking at the primary event site, setting up a rather challenging stage as the young talent from around the globe got set to take each other on in four-man battles.

The first heat of Round 1 pitted Woods against his compatriot Connor O’Leary, Morocco’s Boukhiam and Spain’s Carlos Gomez.

Woods got off to a slow start, but stepped-up during the middle of the heat to post a 6.50 and 5.10 on the score-board, thus finishing with a heat-total of 11.60 points.

Boukhiam breathed down his neck throughout the course of the battle, but eventually ended up short of 0.10 points after scoring a 6.17 and 5.33 off his best-two waves.

O’Leary finished in third place with a heat-total of 9.17 points, while Gomez had to settle for fourth place after registering a heat-total of 7.10 points. Both the surfers were consequently eliminated from the competition.

Ferreira got the better of Karren, America’s Ian Crane and Japan’s Yujiro Chacon in the second heat to advance into the next round.

The Brazilian surfer scored a 4.10 off his first business-wave and backed it up with a 6.93-point ride, thus finishing with a heat-total of 11.03 points.

Karren finished just behind Ferreira in second place after finishing with a two-wave total of 9.97 points, comprising of a 5.67 and 4.30-point ride.

Crane and Tsuji got eliminated from the competition after finishing with a heat-total of 8.13 and 6.98 points respectively.

Heat 3 of Round 1 featured an intense contest with an equally exciting finish. Both Chacon and Bailey fought tooth-and-nail until the very last minute. However once the dust settled, it was the Brazilian surfer who stood victorious with a two-wave total of 12.93 points, which comprised of a 7.60 and 5.33-point ride, while Bailey had to settle for second place after posting a couple of scores in the six-point range to finish with a heat-total of 12.93 points.

America’s Eric Geiselman and Portugal’s Francisco Alves failed to make much of an impact during the course of the four-man battle and eventually rounded out the bottom-two positions due to a heat-total of 7.47 and 6.54 points respectively.
