Supreme Court directs IG Balochistan to prepare a list of target killing victims
Monday, September 3rd, 2012 2:14:46 by Faisal FarooqThe Supreme Court of Pakistan has expressed concerns over deteriorating situation of Balochistan, directing Inspector General Police to submit a list of victims of targeted killings in the province in the last six months.
A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry resumed the hearing of a petition on the law and order situation and violation of human rights in the province.
It is vital to mention here that the petition was filed by the Balochistan Bar Association on the law and order situation in Pakistan’s largest province.
Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry during the today’s proceedings inquired over the delegation of policing powers to the Frontier Corps (FC).
He was of the opinion that police officials were violating court’s verdicts and the situation had deteriorated to the extent that a district judge was not safe in the province.
A session judge along with his guard and driver was killed a few days ago in Quetta.
Chief Justice Chaudhry added, “The concerned authorities are not taking any serious action and are just doing the lip service. Due to the deteriorating condition of law and order, people were forced to migrate towards Punjab, Sindh and other areas”.
The chief justice while addressing IG Balochistan Tariq Omar Khitab inquired what the police had been doing and why had the FC been delegated powers of police when there were already allegations against it.
He observed, “Smuggled cars are being used in Balochistan and that people were openly carrying arms”. In his view the law and order situation was not up to mark in nine districts of the province.
Earlier on Aug 23, the chief justice asked the home secretary and the inspector general of police to launch a major crackdown on elements creating law and order problem in the province.
While taking serious notice of increasing number of missing persons, incidence of kidnapping for ransom, street and other heinous crimes across the province, the chief justice asked the concerned authorities for taking concrete measures for restoring peace in Balochistan.
Balochistan is the largest province of the country and is rich in oil and gas but remains one of the most deprived areas of the country.
