Vicente Romero, Leandro Usuna and Maxime Huscenot qualify for Round 2 at San Miguel Pro Zarautz

Spain’s Vicente Romero, Argentina’s Leandro Usuna and France’s Maxime Huscenot successfully advanced to the second round (Round of 96) at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star San Miguel Pro Zarautz after claiming top honours in their respective Round 1 (Round of 144) heats that went down at Zarautz in Basque Country, Spain, on Tuesday, August 28.

Basque Country’s Tabor Trojaola, Japan’s Teppei Tajima and Chile’s Guillermo Sat managed to extend their life in the event as well by securing second-place finish in their respective Round 1 heats.

The one-to-two foot waves breaking at the main event site promised to deliver plenty of thrilling action as the challenging conditions were bound to test the skills and perseverance of the young surfing talent from around the globe as they competed for survival and a share of the prize purse.

The 10th heat of Round 1 pitted Romero against Trojaola, Peru’s Cristobal De Col and Australia’s Tim Macdonald in a four-man battle for the Round 2 spot.

The Spanish surfer got off to a solid start, earning a 5.83 off his first business-wave and went on to back it up with an impressive 7.00-point ride, thus finishing with a two-wave total of 12.83 points. The score held up until the end to earn him the win.

Trojaola collected a couple of scores in the six-point range to eventually finish with a two-wave total of 12.67 points. The effort proved sufficient to put him in second place and consequently take him through into the next round.

De Col and Macdonald failed to make the Round 2 cut after finishing with a heat-total of 10.57 and 7.70 points respectively.

Usuna got the better of Tajima, France’s Gordon Fontaine and Basque Country’s Infar Unanue in the 11th heat. The Argentinean surfer scored a 4.83 and 5.10 off his best-two waves for a heat-total of 9.93 points.

Tajima accompanied Usuna into the next round after securing runner-up place through a heat-total of 9.43 points, which included a 5.33 and 4.10-point ride.

Fontaine finished in third place with a heat-total of 8.80 points, while Unanue had to settle for a bottom-place finish after registering a heat-total of 7.30 points.

The 12th heat saw Huscenot put on a decent performance to prevail over Sat, Basque Country’s Ezek and Great Britain’s Luis Eyre.

The French surfer earned a 5.83 off his first business-wave and went on to back it up with an additional 5.87 points halfway through the heat, thus finishing with a two-wave total of 11.70 points.

Sat scored a 5.27 and 5.07 off his top-two waves for a heat-total of 10.34 points, which served to put him in runner-up place and consequently take him through into the next round.

Acero and Eyre rounded out the bottom-two positions after finishing with a heat-total of 9.00 and 4.60 points respectively, which resulted in their elimination from the competition.
