Portugal’s Frederico Morais and Costa Rica’s Carlos Munoz successfully made the Round 2 cut as well after managing to grab the runner-up position in their respective heats.
Day two of the competition saw the talented young-guns continue to push hard as they had their sights set on the coveted prize purse and ASP ranking points that were on offer. The sea continued to challenge them with demanding one-to-two foot waves, but the determination to stay alive in the event led to a series of exquisite performances.
The 21st heat pitted De Vries against Morais, France’s Jules Thomet and Basque Country’s Ethan Egiguren in a four-man battle for the Round 2 spot.
As the battle got underway, Vries got off to a busy start and after going through a series of average wave-scores, posted a 6.60 on the score-board. He went on to add an impressive 7.83 points to his account, thus finishing with a heat-total of 14.43 points, which served to earn him the win.
Morais successfully extended his life in the event as well after earning a 6.17 and 8.03 off his best-two waves to eventually finish in second place with a heat-total of 14.20 points.
Thomet and Egiguren got eliminated from the competition after finishing with a two-wave total of 12.83 and 7.27 points respectively.
Watson managed to get the better of Munoz, Great Britain’s Jayce Robinson and France’s Rudy Marechal in the 22nd heat with quite a convincing margin.
The Australian surfer earned a 6.67 off his first business-wave halfway through the heat and went on to back it up with a 6.50-point ride, thus finishing with a heat-total of 13.17 points. The score held up until the end to see him through to victory.
Munoz collected a couple of scores in the five-point range to finish with a heat-total of 10.94 points. The score proved sufficient to put him in second place and consequently see him through into the next round.
Robinson finished in third place with a heat-total of 10.40 points, while Marechal had to settle for bottom position after registering a heat-total of 8.60 points. Both the surfers were forced to make a premature exit from the competition as a result.
