Canadian education reforms-based company Desire2Learn has wound up an $80 Million round of funds for the development of the global education sector. The main goal of the company is to strengthen its cloud-based services to encourage cost-effective online learning process.
The main investors in the process were New Enterprise Associates and Omers Ventures, both of whom have worked with the company for the first time.
“We’re helping the education space make the transition to digital content, from traditional brick-and-mortar schools,” Desire2Learn CEO John Baker said. “It’s a big shift in how people learn.”
Since its operations started 1999, the company has gathered around more than 700 international clients, all looking for quick and cost-effective alternatives to encourage education in different regions of the world.
“We’re trying to transform the way the world learns,” Baker said. “We’re helping our clients make the digital transition.”
The company has around 560 employees at its stations and is planning to induct another 200 to widen the span of its operations. The biggest competitor to Desire2Learn is the privately held Blackboard.
“As the $1 trillion-plus education market shifts from older legacy products to best-of-breed cloud solutions, Desire2Learn is the clear market leader in a rapidly transforming industry,” Jon Sakoda, partner at venture capital firm New Enterprise Associates, said in a statement.
The company strives for making use of the contemporary technology and making the educational material in reach of its international clients. Its services and products are used in a wide array of classes from kindergarten through higher education.
Desire2Learn has its own cloud service for easy access to the desired but also uses Microsoft’s SkyDrive and Amazon’s cloud service.
