Supreme Court says no breakthrough yet in missing persons’ case
Wednesday, September 5th, 2012 1:15:04 by Faisal FarooqExpressing dissatisfaction over the absence of interior and defense secretaries, the Supreme Court on Wednesday said that no major breakthrough has been occurred in the missing persons’ case thus far.
A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry comprising Justice Jawwad S Khawaja and Justice Khilji Arif Hussain resumed the hearing the case of enforced disappearances and law and order situation.
Despite the court orders, the federal secretaries for interior and defence failed to appear for the hearing.
Chief Justice Chaudhry, who was irked with the absence of federal secretaries, said that the government was not bothered in improving law and order situation in the region.
He remarked, “Such attitudes give the impression that the federation is not interested in what happens in Balochistan”.
The Deputy Attorney General while explaining the absence of the defence secretary said that he could not appear for the hearing on account of previously scheduled meetings with several delegations.
The chief justice asked the Inspector General of Frontier Corps (FC) to accept the responsibility of failure in the province
To this, IG Frontier Corps Obaidullah Khattak said that all residents of the province were important however the paramilitary force could not make significant progress over the recovery of missing persons.
In reply to this, the chief justice said the recovering of the missing persons was first priority of the bench.
He stated that the law enforcement agencies have been failed in accomplishing the task, adding that the law would its course in the prevailing situation.
He was of the opinion that the people that the Inspector General Police, Balochistan, Tariq Omar Khitab had been referring to should be handed over to the police.
To this, IG Frontier Corps said that the country couldn’t tackle the threats the country was facing.
In counter remarks, the chief justice said, “The security situation in the province was deteriorating on a daily basis and that judges, uniformed coast guards and members of the Shia community are being targeted and killed”.
Khattak replied that the court should also consider the sacrifices of the paramilitary force in the region in maintaining law and order in the province.
