We will not allow anyone to endanger our existence: President Zardari

President Asif Ali Zardari has said that no one will be allowed to endanger existence of the country, adding that the forces of extremism, sectarianism and militancy were posing serious threats to the integrity of the nation.

In his message on the Defence Day of the Pakistan, the president reiterated the pledge to revive the spirit of unity of September 1965 in confronting the new challenges, particularly the militancy.

He observed, “Pakistan was a moderate, tolerant and peaceful nation, where political choices were made by the ballot. Let us, therefore, pledge that we will never allow anyone to endanger our existence as a moderate, tolerant and peaceful nation”.

He stressed a persistent need for clarity of purpose and national unity to confront the challenges, saying that the demonstration of consistency among the masses, uniqueness of purpose at the national level and valiance of the military forces made September 6, a memorable day in the national history of the country.

The president further said that the people from all over Pakistan and representing all shades of opinion on this day in 1965 joined hands in standing behind the armed forces in fight against enmity.

He stated, “The commemoration of September 6 revives our spirits and strengthens our resolve to defend the country against all kinds of threats and to be always prepared for any sacrifice for its integrity and honor.”

In another sitting, President Zardari said that the Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) government was committed to safeguarding the rights of the minorities as equal citizens of the state.

He pledged, “The minorities have every right to practice their faith freely and it was the responsibility of the government to create an enabling environment for them to contribute their share in the nation-building process”.

He issued directives to the concerned authorities to take various measures for the protection of minorities in the country.

Expressing the hope, he asked the religious leaders, parliamentarians and members of civil society to recommend measures to prevent the misuse of laws against the minorities.
