Marlon Lipke and Jonathan Gonzalez make the Round 3 cut at San Miguel Pro Zarautz
Thursday, September 6th, 2012 10:12:24 by Muhammad Qasim HassanGermany’s Marlon Lipke and Canary Island’s Jonathan Gonzalez made it through into the third round (Round of 48) at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star San Miguel Pro Zarautz after claiming victory in their respective Round 2 (Round of 96) heats that went down at the main event site of Zarautz in Basque Country, Spain, on Thursday, August 30.
Australia’s Ty Watson finished behind Lipke in second place during the 13th heatto accompany the latter into the next round. Reunion Island’s Medi Veminardi and America’s Nat Young got eliminated from the competition after rounding out the bottom-two positions.
The 14th heat saw Australia’s Matt Banting successfully extend his life in the competition after finishing in runner-up place. Brazil’s Alan Jhones finished third, while America’s Magnum Martinez finished in fourth place. Both the surfers were consequently forced to make a premature exit from the event.
The coveted prize and ASP ranking points on offer were bound to result in a series of exquisite performances from the skilful surfing talent from around the globe.
The 13th heat saw Lipke pitted against Watson, Veminardi and Young in a four-man battle for the Round 3 spot.
As the battle got underway, Lipke did not waste much time before getting down to business. Locking his first business-wave, he posted a 6.50 on the score-board and soon backed it up with a 5.33-point ride, thus finishing with a heat-total of 11.83 points.
Watson barely missed out on the winning spot, having to settle for runner-up place after finishing with a heat-total of 11.27 points, which included a 4.10 and 7.17-point ride.
Veminardi and Young finished with a heat-total of 8.43 and 8.23 points respectively, which resulted n their elimination from the competition.
The 14th heat saw Gonzalez get the better of Banting, Jhones and Martinez after putting on an impressive performance. Looking at ease for most part of the heat, the Canary Island-based surfer collected a 5.93 and an 8.60 off his best-two waves, thus finishing with a heat-total of 14.53 points. The score proved sufficient to keep him on top until the end.
Banting made the Round 3 cut as well after finishing with a heat-total of 13.60 points, which comprised of a 6.50 and 7.10-point ride.
Jhones finished in third place with a heat-total of 11.30 points, while Martinez finished last after registering a heat-total of 8.20 points.
