Supreme Court seeks final report from authorities
Thursday, September 6th, 2012 2:56:08 by Faisal FarooqThe Supreme Court on Thursday sought a final report from authorities concerned, expressing severe concerns over the deteriorating law and order situation in the province.
A three-judge bench of the apex court with Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry in the chair resumed the hearing of a petition filed by Balochistan Bar Association on the law and order situation and human.
The bench directed Federal Defence Secretary Lt-Gen (retd) Asif Yasin Malik, Chief Secretary Balochistan Babar Yaqoob Fateh Muhammad, and Inspector General Police Tariq Omar Khitab and IG Frontier Corps Obaidullah Khattak to submit a joint statement on the issue today.
Obaidullah Khattak and Yasin Malik appeared before the bench but the Federal Interior Secretary did not turn up that irked the court.
Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry addressing the Defence Secretary said that there was a dearth of efficient officers in the province asking why incompetent officers had not been removed from their posts.
He said, “Despite the fact that the court was hearing the case for the past four days, there was zero progress on the issue and no one was ready to take responsibility in the province”.
Citing example of a 16-year-old son of a businessman, who was kidnapped for ransom from the province’s Pishin district 16 days ago, he said despite the presence of the deputy commissioner, police and levies the youngster was not recovered thus far.
Chief Justice Chaudhry asked the Defence Secretary to write his statement in two words whether they have passed or failed in resolving the issue in Balochistan.
During the hearing, Justice Khilji Arif Hussain said that everyone was sleeping under a blanket and that no one had any sense of responsibility to improve the situation in the province.
Balochistan was the backbone of the country and hence it needed to be stabilized, he added.
In reply to this, the Inspector General FC said that his organization was using all its resources to ensure peace in the province. In his view, the situation in the province was deplorable and that some foreign forces were acting in the province.
In counterargument, the chief justice said that strict action should be taken against foreign agents if they had ever been arrested thus far.
Earlier during Wednesday’s hearing of the case, the Supreme Court had observed that the rising incidents of sectarian and target killings in Balochistan were tarnishing the country’s image internationally.
