Awami National Party rejects new Local Government system in Sindh
Friday, September 7th, 2012 3:15:01 by Faisal FarooqIn what appeared to be another shock to the government, Awami National Party (ANP), the other coalition partner of the Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP), has rejected the Sindh People’s Local Government Ordinance (SPLGO)-2012.
ANP Spokesman Senator Zahid Khan issued a statement, saying that his party would not accept any such system made by the absolute rulers.
It stated, “The promulgation of SPLGO-2012 Ordinance tantamount to robbing the rights of the people. Protest demos would be staged and an emergent consultative meeting of the ANP leadership has been called here today”.
The party announced that it would boycott all sessions of the Senate and the national and provincial assemblies in protest of the new local government system.
Earlier on Thursday night, Governor Sindh Dr Isharul Ibad and Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah inked the new law about local government institutions.
The ANP said that it was taken on board over the new development.
ANP’s Sindh chief, Shahi Syed termed the ordinance a black law, adding that they were not taken in the loop over the deliberations pertaining to the new developments.
Calling the MQM “a terrorist organization, he said the new law was an injustice to the people of Sindh and that the ruling PPP did not take the ANP into confidence before its approval.
Meanwhile, ANP’s Bushra Gohar said that the party had withdrawn its minister from the Sindh government. She was of the opinion the new law had been passed secretively in order to appease a certain political party.
The new law, which had been named “Sindh People’s Local Government Ordinance (SPLGO)-2012”, was signed after days of intense deliberations between the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), the two major parties in Sindh’s ruling coalition.
According to the ordinance, the new system will be functional in five districts of the province which included Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Larkana and Mirpur Khas while remaining part of the province will have District Councils.
Mayors and deputy mayors would head the metropolitan corporations and chairman and deputy chairman would tend to the affairs of district governments.
