New screen technology will play the God in the new iPhone, experts say

The most important and significant feature of the new iPhone from Apple, expected to be released at the September 12 event in San Francisco, will be display. The screen has been by and large the most discussed aspect of the new iPhone.

Various sources and rumours have suggested that that new phone will be augmented by a 4-inch screen in 16:9 aspect ratio. It will replace the 3.5-inch display that has been an integral part of the handset since its debut in 2007.

Rumour has it that the new display will be based on the new in-cell touch technology that tremendously reduces the breadth of the component and makes room inside the chassis. The new technology blends the touch sensors and the liquid crystals into a single file, which is more cost effective and exceptionally thin.

There are two benefits from the new screen technology, the phone can be made thinner than usual or it can make room for a larger battery. Though the size of the phone is already expected to increase due to the bigger screen size from 3.5 inches to 4 inches, however, the battery life has always been iPhone’s Achilles’ heel, or smartphones for that matter.

The general consensus is that the Cupertino giants will go for a larger battery, taxing the probable thickness of the device.

“The bottom line is that the battery will need to be bigger,” NPD DisplaySearch analyst Shawn Lee said in a recent report. “With phone thickness and volume at a premium, Apple and other smartphone makers need all other components to be thinner to make space for a larger battery. This is where in-cell touch can bring additional benefits (first to the iPhone 5): enabling greater battery capacity.”

The speculation on the battery life is that it will be prolonged by 40 percent due to the room left by the new screen and increased density in the battery itself.

Apple has outsourced the new screens to three vendors; Sharp, Japan Display and LG Electronics, according to Canaccord Genuity analyst Michael Walkley. However, Sharp is behind schedule because of some manufacturing snafus, Walkley added.
