Two stage victories in the 2012 season were enough to secure Thomas Dekker’s future as Team Garmin-Sharp has extended its contract with the cyclist for two more seasons.
His only two wins include a team time trial stage 2 win at the Tour of Qatar, along with a stage 5 win at the Circuit de la Sarthe 2012.
The 28-year-old marked his professional debut with Team Rabobank in 2005 and stayed with the team for a period of four years. Team Silence-Lotto signed him for 2009 and 2010 seasons before he moved to Chipotle Development Team in 2011.
He was offered a one-year contract from Team Garmin-Barracuda, which he was obliged to accept and worked really hard to prove his worth in the American side.
It seems like the Dutch has impressed Jonathan Vaughters and he is keen to have Thomas on his side for the two coming seasons.
“We, my management, Jonathan Vaughters and me, assessed the comeback so far and we made new plans for the future,” Thomas voiced.
“I am very happy that we share the same vision and that I can keep working with these people in this team”.
Dekker faced a two-year suspension after he was tested positive for EPO and marked his return to professional cycling in August 2011, alongside his previous side, Chipotle Development Team.
He was overjoyed after securing a one year contract with the World Tour side, Team Garmin-Sharp which helped him getting back on his feet after the ban.
“Garmin-Sharp gave me the opportunity to return in a good way to the highest level of cycling and I will be eternally grateful for that,” he noted.
“Garmin-Sharp is all about clean cycling and I am very much aware of my specific role in that respect. The team supports me and I support the team and Jonathan Vaughters in their fight against doping”.
The cyclist is currently in action at the Vuelta a Espana, where he is warming up for a more serious goal of the season, UCI Road World Championships 2012 in Holland.
Only time will tell if Thomas manages to fulfil Jonathan Vaughters expectations for the coming season and finds the right momentum to help the team with his true potential.
