Former world number one, Serena Williams, crushed the Italian star, Sara Errani, with a breadstick to secure a place in the final round at the Flushing Meadows. The Belarusian number one, Victoria Azarenka, on the other hand bounced back to oust the gorgeous
Russian, Maria Sharapova, in a three-set thriller to progress.
Williams, who recently completed her Career Golden Slam, displayed flawless performance to crush the 10th seed, Sara Errani, with a breadstick. She swiped her entire serves without facing any hindrance and cashed in four out of 10 break chances
to manipulate a 6-1, 6-2 score line in one hour and four minutes.
"The way she wants to win, and when she plays like this, I think she’s the best player in the world," Errani praised the American icon. "I believed I could do it before the match and I tried everything I could – first set I tried to be more defensive and
play more high balls, but that was not so good, so I changed and tried to be more aggressive. I lost 1 and 2. It was very difficult. She’s a great player."
The American number will face off the top seed, Azarenka, in the final round.
The top ranked Belarusian star made a sloppy start and gifted away the opening set. However, she made an epic comeback and pulled out the victory in 156 minutes.
"Towards the end of the first set I was getting a little bit better, getting more and more comfortable in the match," the ecstatic Belarusian stated in a post match press conference. "So even though I lost the first set, once it finished, I thought I could
turn it around and start from zero."
Azarenka lost her serve three times but capitalised on five out of 12 break opportunities to steal the show.
