Chile’s Manuel Selman successfully extended his life in the competition as well after finishing behind Cardoso in runner-up place during the ninth heat. Australia’s Dion Atkinson finished in third place, while France’s Vincent Duvignac had to settle for bottom position. Both the surfers got removed from the contention for the event title.
The 10th heat saw Brazil’s Luel Felipe made the Round 4 cut as well after finishing in second place. New Zealand’s Ricardo Christie and America’s Nathan Yeomans finished in third and fourth place, which resulted in their premature exit from the competition.
In contention for the coveted prize money and ASP ranking points on offer, the up-and-coming professional talent from around the world clearly had their work cut out. They kept pushing hard as they took each other on in three-to-four foot waves with onshore wind conditions prevailing at the site.
Cardoso managed to prevail over Selman, Atkinson and Duvignac in the ninth heat after managing to put on a decent performance, which eventually took him to a heat-total of 12.27 points, which included a 5.50 and 6.77-point ride.
Selman made the Round 4 cut as well after scoring a 5.17 and 6.70 off his best-two waves to finish in second place with a heat-total of 11.87 points.
Atkinson finished in third place with a heat-total of 11.20 points, while Duvignac registered a heat-total of 8.47 points, thus finishing at the bottom.
The next heat saw Standlick walk away with top honours after collecting a couple of decent scores off his best-two waves. The Australian scored a 6.67 off his first business-wave halfway through the heat and went on to back it up with a 5.67-point ride, thus concluding the heat with a decisive heat-total of 12.34 points.
Felipe finished in second place after finishing with a heat-total of 11.83 points, which included a 6.33 and 5.50-point ride. The effort proved sufficient to take him through into the next round.
Christie and Yeomans failed to survive the day after rounding out the bottom-two positions due to a heat-total of 11.73 and 9.77 points respectively.
