Irish surfer Glenn Hall and Brazilian powerhouse Jano Belo emerged triumphant in their respective Round 4 (Round of 24) heats at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star San Miguel Pro Zarautz that continued at the main event site of Zarautz in Basque Country, Spain, on Friday, August 31.

Frances’s Joan Duru successfully extended his life in the event as well after securing runner-up position during the first heat, thus accompanying Hall into the fifth round (Round of 5). America’s Luke Davis finished in third place, thus getting eliminated from the competition.

With Belo clinching top honours in the second heat, Morocco’s Ramzi Boukhiam had to settle for runner-up place. Both the surfers moved into the next round. Australia’s Matt Wilkinson failed to make the Round 5 cut due to his third-place finish.

For the past the few days, the crowd were getting to witness the up-and-coming surfers battling it out in four-man battles to stay alive in the contention for the coveted prize and ASP ranking points that were on offer. However, the fifth round pitted them against each other in three-man battles for the Round 5 spot.

The opening heat saw Hall squaring-off with Duru and Davis. As the battle got underway, the Irish surfer got down to business right away, unleashing his stylish tricks on his first business-wave to post a 6.43 on the score-board. He went on to back it up with a 4.97-point ride almost half-way through the heat, thus finishing with a heat-total of 11.40 points.

Duru finished in runner-up place after scoring a heat-total of 10.40 points, which includes a 6.43 and 3.97-point ride. The result proved sufficient to take him through into the next round.

Davis scored a 4.33 and 5.63 off his best-two waves, thus finishing with a heat-total of 9.96 points. This resulted in his elimination from the competition.

The second heat saw Belo take on Boukhiam and Wilkinson a three-man battle for the Round 5 spot.

As the battle got underway, the 30-year-old Brazilian surfer scored a 7.33 off his first business-wave and went on to back it up with a 6.50-point ride, thus finishing with a heat-total of 13.83 points.

Boukhiam scored a 7.50 and 6.17 off his best-two waves, thus finishing with a heat-total of 13.67 points, consequently moving into the next round.

Wilkinson got eliminated from the competition after finishing with a heat-total of 9.83 points, which included a 5.00 and 4.83-point ride.
