Indian External Affairs Minister S. M. Krishna terms Pakistan’s visit fruitful
Monday, September 10th, 2012 10:50:24 by Faisal FarooqIndian External Affairs Minister S. M. Krishna has concluded his three-day visit on an optimistic note, terming the trip fruitful and a positive step towards better and stronger ties between Pakistan and India.
In his last day of visit, Krishna besides visiting Data Shrine, Minar-e-Pakistan and Gurdwara Dera in Lahore held meetings with Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif and Governor Punjab Latif Khosa.
While speaking to the media, he said that his trip was one of the links to make the relations between the two countries peaceful and friendly.
He observed, “Indian people and leadership desired to see a prosperous‚ stable and strong Pakistan as a neighbor, as it was in the favor of the region. Both the neighboring countries had developed better relations in the era of democracy, but longstanding issues could not be resolved in one or two meetings”.
Krishna was of the opinion that he had inked a number of agreements with Pakistan including visa liberation, cultural promotion trade pacts. In his view, all such steps would help fostering mutual ties between Islamabad and New Delhi.
In a one-on-one meeting between Krishna and CM Punjab Shahbaz Sharif, matters of mutual interests came under discussion.
Krishna said the two neighboring countries were sovereign and independent and they should live like good neighbors.
He noted, “We both have no other option but to live peacefully. We have a good friend in Pakistan and a good neighbor. We need to nurture the relations and the trust and to build on the trust between the two countries in the days to come”.
Stressed the need for ushering in a new era of cooperation and cordial relations between New Delhi and Islamabad, he said the issues outstanding issues saddled on them by history couldn’t be resolved without negotiations.
The Indian minister underscored the need to enhance people to people interaction, as it were the people that were at the heart of everything.
New Delhi would like to take the relations forwards to the most progressive direction on all issues, he remarked.
During his three-day visit to Pakistan, S. M Krishna held meetings with all important dignitaries including President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf and Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar.
