Mark Cavendish to leave Team Sky after the 2012

Mark Cavendish signed a three-year deal with Team Sky at the start of 2012 season, which means that the cyclist is still under contract with the British side.

However, the Manxman has confirmed on Saturday that he will pretty soon start negotiating with the team management about ending his term.

“It’s like a long-distance relationship. Everything’s great but you live apart and it can’t really work out,” he voiced.

The cyclist is currently riding the Tour of Britain and has noted that he will soon start the discussions with the Team’s General Manager, David Brailsford in the days to come.

Mark was upset by the lack of support that he received during the Tour de France 2012, which prevented him from retaining the Tour de France green jersey.

The team was more focussed towards the overall classification, which was the main reason why Bradley Wiggins and Christopher Froome were given the maximum support.

Wiggins became the first British rider ever to claim an easy overall victory at the race, while Christopher Froome occupied the second overall position at the Tour de France 2012.

Peter Sagan claimed an overall victory after the final point’s classifications with as many as 421 UCI points in his back pocket while Andre Greipel (280 points) and Matthew Harley Goss (268 points) secured the second and third positions respectively.

Mark Cavendish had to settle for the fourth overall position as he could only secure 220 UCI points throughout the three-week race.

“We obviously had ambitions that can’t work out. The Tour de France is the hardest sporting event in the world,” he briefed.

“When you realize that you can’t go in with a double-pronged attack…that maybe became apparent at the Tour. I was incredibly proud to be part of the British team that won the yellow jersey with a British rider [Bradley Wiggins]”.

“That was a big thing in my career. Hopefully we can find an amicable solution”.

While Mark is keen to find a new home to continue his 2013 professional endeavour, most likely with the Team Omega Pharma-Quick Step, Team Sky management is working on resolving the conflict to retain its star rider for the season ahead.
