Spain inches closer towards the final showdown at the Davis Cup World Group after taking a 2-0 lead over USA – Tennis News

Spanish number two, David Ferrer, bounced back to overpower America’s Sam Querrey in the opening rubber. His compatriot, Nicolas Almagro on the other hand required four hours and 16 minutes to upset the American number one John Isner in the second round.
As a result, Spain took a 2-0 lead over the visiting nation in the semi-finals.

The world number five, Ferrer showed his class after losing the opening set. He quickly found his rhythm and not only took a 2-1 lead in the FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Head 2 Head Series against Querrey but also maintained his unbeaten
record on clay courts at the Davis Cup.

“I think the first set, he was playing more aggressive than me. I broke him the first game but he played good in the final [part] of the first set,” assessed the Spanish veteran after winning the match. “In the second set, I broke the first game and I played
more consistent and solid… I could have lost the fourth set. He had a lot of chances. I was very focussed on every break point down. Finally I broke him in the last game.”  

The Spanish number three showed spectacular tennis to outsmart Isner in their second battle against each other. He improved to a 2-0 lead in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head Series against the American top ranked star.

Almagro stated in a post match press conference:

“It was very tough. I think he served really good. I didn’t feel very comfortable at the court when he was serving. But we are happy because it’s Friday and we’re 2-0 up.”

The world number 10 cashed in three out of 19 break chances and won 77 per cent of his first serve share.
