Three killed in train collision in Karachi
Monday, September 17th, 2012 1:03:17 by Faisal FarooqAt least three people including a railway employee and two other passengers reportedly lost their lives while more than 10 injured when two trains collided near Bin Qasim Railway Station on Monday.
Divisional Superintendent Railway while speaking to the media confirmed the accident and feared more causalities. The railway employee was identified as Ali Asghar.
He said Millat Express was on down track when Shalimar Express hit it some 50 kilometers away from Karachi. Some 2 to 3 bogies of Millat Express were derailed whereas the engine of the Shalimar express was damaged as well in result of the powerful collision, he added.
SP Railways Karachi Arshad Kamal Kiyani also confirmed the accident saying that three people killed and 10 others received injuries who were shifted to Jinnah hospital.
Soon after the incident, Pakistan Army arrived at the site to help with the rescue services but left after the compartments of the trains were removed from the tracks.
Emergency was declared in hospitals and railway services have been suspended since the incident.
An alternate train was earlier sent to receive the stranded passengers, but its engine broke down near Cantt Station, after which another train was sent.
Governor Sindh Dr Ishratul Ebad while taking notice of the incident sought a report at the earliest.
Initial investigation showed that the failure of the signal system had caused the accident.
