A team of Mexican archaeologists have gained access for the first time, to a tomb of about 1,500 years old that may contain the remains of an early Maya rulers, Kuk Bahlam I, as reported in the Mexican press.
The burial chamber was discovered thirteen years ago in Palenque, in the State of Chiapas (southern Mexico), but it was not until now that a team from the National Institute of Anthropology and History has gained access to this royal tomb, located
in the inside the so-called Temple XX, in the archaeological site of Palenque, as indicated by the daily ‘Millennium’.
Kuk Bahlam I, who came to power in 431 AD, is the founder of the dynasty to which belonged the famous Mayan ruler Pakal, the most famous of the so-called ‘Lords of Palenque’, who ruled two centuries later and whose tomb was discovered half a century
ago in this very place by archaeologist Alberto Ruz Lhuillier.
