Twin blasts kill seven in Karachi
Tuesday, September 18th, 2012 10:38:21 by Faisal FarooqAt least seven people including a child and women were reportedly killed and several injured as two explosions took place one after the other near the Dolmen Shopping Centre in Hyderi Market, area of Karachi.
According to police, the Bohri Community was the main target of these bomb explosions, which went off within minutes of each other in the usually crowded Hyderi Market.
An official of Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) while speaking to the media said, Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) packed with ball bearings were used in carrying out deadly explosions.
He said the first bomb of high intensity was planted on a motorcycle while the second of low intensity was planted near a tree.
The first bomb exploded in a garbage cabin and three minutes later another went off at the main parking lot in which about a dozen vehicles were damaged, he added.
The powerful blasts destroyed two vehicles and damaged several others parked nearby while window panes of the surrounding buildings were also shattered.
SSP Police Raja Umar Khattab while briefing the media said some six to eight kilograms of explosive material was used in the blasts, adding that the blasts indicate that the peaceful Bohri community was the target of the miscreants.
He observed, “Sectarian groups might be involved in the blasts”.
Another police official, SSP Central Asim Qaimkhani also confirmed that the initial investigations indicate that the Bohri community was the target of the attack.
He was of the opinion that the community has been chosen by miscreants as a soft target.
The cop said, “The first explosive device, planted in a motor bike, was of high intensity while another explosive device, planted near a garbage area, was of low intensity”.
Karachi city police chief Iqbal Mehmood said: “The blast occurred at a place from where we had recovered and safely defused a heavy bomb last month. I can’t say which terrorist organization or individuals are behind this at this point of time”.
It may be recalled that police had recovered and defused on August 13 explosives measuring many kilograms which had been planted at the same point where today’s blasts have taken place.
