Julian Wilson and Matt Wilkinson survive Round 2 at 2012 Hurley Pro

Australia’s Julian Wilson and his fellow countryperson Matt Wilkinson advanced to the third round at the 2012 Hurley Pro, sixth of ten stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour, after claiming top honours in their respective Round 2 heats that went down at Lower Trestles in California, America, on Monday, September 17.

Wilson got the better of Brazil’s Jadson Andre in the fifth heat to successfully move into the next round while bringing the competition to a premature end for his rival.

The sixth heat saw Wilkinson put on an impressive performance to down the local talent CJ Hobgood, advancing to the next round while removing the latter from the contention for the event title.

The three-to-four foot waves on offer at the iconic beach-break of Lower Trestles presented a juicy opportunity for the best surfers from around the world to put on solid performances and regaining confidence after failing to make much of an impact on the opening day of the latest elite tour event.

The fifth heat pitted Wilson against Andre in a one-on-one bout for survival. Having stumbled in the opening round, both the surfers found the pressure of elimination hanging over their heads.

As the battle got underway, Andre got off to an impressive start. He went through a series of average scores before eventually posting a 7.60 on the scoreboard. Keeping the momentum going, he immediately backed it up with an additional 6.67-point ride, thus finishing with a heat-total of 14.27 points.

Wilson responded with an excellent 8.00 off his first business-wave and went on to add an additional 6.63 points to his account, thus finishing with a decisive heat-total of 14.63 points.

The sixth heat saw Wilkinson taking on Hobgood for a place in the third round. The Australian surfer put on an impressive performance, getting his hands on a couple of big scores to eventually reach a heat-total of 14.66 points.

Despite possessing the local knowledge of the waves, Hobgood struggled to lock decent waves and eventually had to settle for a two-wave total of 11.30 points, which included a 5.30 and 6.00-point ride. As a result, he was forced to concede victory to his rival.
