Wise move by Raja Pervez Ashraf to uphold democracy in the country
Wednesday, September 19th, 2012 2:37:34 by Faisal FarooqApparently Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf took a wise step by submitting that he had given Law Minister Farooq H. Naek authority to write letter to the Swiss authorities withdrawing letter written by the former Attorney General Malik Abdul Qayyum.
His submission to the five-member bench of the apex court indicates flexibility in the government’s stance which came as a result of consultations between the allied parties who wanted to end confrontation with the judiciary.
In the face of fast approaching elections, the coalition partners wanted to devote more attention to the issues agitating the minds of the masses.
It is vital to mention here that the Supreme Court during the last hearing had observed that PM Ashraf could give authority to someone to write letter to Swiss government to reopen graft cases against President Asif Ali Zardari.
After holding discussions with President Asif Ali Zardari and allied parties, the premier took the decision which legal experts have declared as a positive development and a turning point in the case.
The ball is in the court of Law Minister Farooq H. Naek. The court has directed the minister to draft the letter, show it to the court and dispatched the letter to the Attorney General Geneva so that the chapter is closed as soon as possible as far as implementation of the NRO verdict is concerned.
In what appeared to be a positive development, Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf said that he had gone through all aspects of the case which are very sensitive and the government wanted to resolve the issue without any holdup.
He believed that the issue was also discussed with some top legal experts who had advised the government that the letter should be written to the Swiss officials.
Some questions, however, are being raised by political analysts that why the PPP sacrificed Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani at the hands of the Supreme Court if the letter of Malik Qayyum was to be withdrawn.
Anyway, the premier has presented has case very wisely and got the much needed time to complete the first-ever five year term of the independent assemblies.
