Thursday, September 20th, 2012 5:39:16 by Muhammad Qasim HassanAustralia’s Taj Burrow and France’s Jeremy Flores made the Round 4 cut at the 2012 Hurley Pro, the latest stop on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour, after claiming top honours in their respective Round 3 heats that went down at the iconic Lower Trestles in California, America, on Wednesday, September 19.
Burrow got his hands on the win and secured his place in the next round by getting the better of his fellow countryperson Adam Melling in the third heat, consequently removing the latter from the contention for the event title.
The fourth heat saw Australia’s Kai Otton succumb to the outstanding performance put on by Flores, getting eliminated from the event while sending the latter into the next round as a result.
With four-to-six foot glassy waves on offer at the primary event site on the latest day of the competition, there was plenty of thrilling action in store for the huge crowd in attendance as the elite ASP surfers were expected to deliver a series of exciting performances.
The third heat pitted Burrow against Melling in a battle for the Round 4 spot. The pressure of elimination was bound to bring out the best in both the surfers, though the former surely had a bit of an advantage over his compatriot in terms of experience.
As the battle got underway, Burrow wasted very little time before asserting his dominance over his rival with an 8.77-point ride.
The tide of the battle turned as Melling managed to find himself a 7.03-point ride and successfully went on to back it up with a 7.27-point ride, thus moving to a heat-total of 14.30 points.
Burrow had a bit of a score as he found himself trailing his compatriot with only a few minutes for the buzzer to go off, but fortunately for him, the arrival of a relatively juicy wave allowed him to add a 6.83 to his account, taking him to a heat-total of 15.60 points and thus sealing the deal in his favour.
The fourth heat saw Flores and Otton squaring-off for survival in a man-on-man battle. Both the surfers got off to a relatively modest start, struggling to offer their best in the glassy waves on offer.
As the heat progressed, however, Flores began to look more comfortable and went on to confirm this with an 8.17 and 8.03-point ride, reaching a heat-total of 16.20 points.
Otton, on the other hand, struggled to find his rhythm until the end and only managed to get to a heat-total of 12.23 points, comprising of a 5.80 and 6.43-point ride, which led him to taste defeat.
