Darren Sammy wants West Indies bowlers to show improved performance against Ireland
Monday, September 24th, 2012 5:51:56 by Rana Nasir GhafoorWest Indian skipper Darren Sammy has admitted that his bowlers need to come up with an improved act to win the decisive World T20 Group B match against Ireland on Monday.
The Windies are currently in a do-or-die situation after facing a terrible loss at the hands of Australia. In a rain-hit match, Sammy’s men lost by nine wickets on the Duckworth-Lewis method last weekend.
Sammy stated that it was unfortunate to see rain affecting the game. He was not ready to concede that the Kangaroos were in a winning position when the showers arrive.
"I think rain played its part, otherwise it would have been a cracker of a game. The build-up was very exciting and I think both teams did deliver, but it was unfortunate that rain came when it did. We thought we were still in it. They still needed nine
an over and they had to keep going," said Sammy.
He added: "It’s unfortunate that weather played a part but that’s something we have to get over. We are now looking forward to the next game against Ireland."
"We back ourselves to set targets and I think we did that. It’s good we achieved our first target with the bat, put lots of runs on the board. We came here to win the World Cup and that is still the plan. We need to win against Ireland and make sure we qualify
for the Super Eights and take it from there."
On the other hand, Ireland are facing plenty of problems. A number of Irish players fell ill ahead of the crucial game. The team management, however, is hopeful that all those affect by the stomach bug will be available for the big game.
"It’s happened to me before and you have to find an inner resolve – (coach) Phil (Simmons) will be stressing that. There will be a lot of adrenalin and I hope it will overcome any illness," said batsman Niall O’Brien."
Irish captain William Porterfield is also hell-bent to avoid embarrassment, which his side faced against the Aussies a few days ago. He shared ahead of the game: "The first six overs with bat and ball are going to be crucial."
"If we can restrict their runs and then make a good start with the bat then we have a good chance. They have destructive batters like Chris Gayle but they can also make mistakes and we have to put the ball in the right place.”
