Anurag Basu: I never expected ‘Barfi’ to be so popular
Wednesday, September 26th, 2012 4:52:38 by Imran Shaukat KhanIndian director Anurag Basu is having a high time in the industry since his latest film ‘Barfi’, which featured Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Ileana D’Cruz and Rupa Ganguly in the lead roles, has done an excellent business at the box office.
The film, which was released on September 14, has been liked by almost everyone out there and it has been selected for the Oscars as well.
While speaking on his inclusion, Anurag said he knew his film would garner positive response but he never thought it would become so popular.
“The Oscar nomination is like a bonus. On the day it was announced I was locked away writing my next script, so I had no clue until late in the night. Let me not be overly modest and let me admit I knew Barfi would be liked by critics and would go to various film festivals. It has already been selected for the Busan, Marrakesh and the Taipei film festival. What took me by surprise was the popular mandate given to Barfi. I never expected it to be so popular. ”
Many in the country are now wondering whether if Anurag will make a sequel to the film or not. When asked the director, he said he doesn’t have such plans on his mind right now but he will give it a thought.
He said, “We are discussing some possibilities. But it’s too early to talk about them. A sequel is definitely out. Where I will take Barfi’s story when he is already dead? If the producers feel comfortable with the idea they’re welcome to do sequel to Barfi. The Bhatts did a sequel to my film Murder. I was not involved with it.”
Well, all said and done, ‘Barfi’, which revolved around a mute and deaf boy in Darjeeling and his relation with girls, one of whom was autistic, was certainly a treat for the audiences. So let’s see if Anurag decides to make a sequel to the movie.
