Due to unknown reasons, the maiden and historic visit of Russian President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin to Pakistan has been postponed for an indefinite period.

Presidents of Afghanistan, Russia and Tajikistan were scheduled to reach Islamabad on October 1, on three-day tour to attend the Quadrilateral Summit.

A statement on Thursday issued by the Foreign Office said that the conference which was scheduled to be held in Islamabad on October 2 had been postponed.

The statement quoting the spokesman to the office said that the visit of the presidents had also been held over.

The conference was expected to exchange views over regional cooperation and Afghan stability and peace with other leaders. It further said that the new dates for the conference would be announced later.

The spokesperson said that new dates of the Quadrilateral Summit will be worked out after seeking convenience of the respective leaders through diplomatic channels.

He said President Vladimir Putin in a letter to the President of Pakistan expressed his eagerness to jointly enhance our efforts to further develop Russian-Pakistani ties and advance mutually beneficial trade and economic projects.

The Russian President wrote “I am confident that in future we shall be able to find opportunities for arranging our personal meeting. We shall always be happy to receive you in Russia”.

Some analysts believe that cancellation of Putin’s visit could be linked to Islamabad’s reluctance to award Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline work to Russian company without bidding.
