Top seed Victoria Azarenka was forced to withdraw from the tournament prior to her quarter-final match against the fifth seed, Angelique Kerber, at the Toray Pan Pacific Open 2012, a WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Five event taking place in Tokyo,
Japan.
The world number one, Azarenka felt dizziness before her match against the German number one. As a result, she decided to retire from this outdoor hard court event.
The Belarusian number one stated in a press conference:
"I wasn’t feeling well before this tournament and had real trouble focusing on the court yesterday – today I hoped I’d feel better but unfortunately not. Maybe this is just the end of a long year where I’ve played a lot of matches. I’m not really sure what’s
wrong, but I’ll have tests to see what it is. I’m very sorry to be withdrawing. I would have loved to go out on the court and shown my best tennis, but my health is the most important thing. I want to come back here next year and show some good tennis to the
Japanese fans."
Kerber on the other hand was rewarded a spot in the semi-finals at the Ariake Coliseum.
The second seed, Maria Sharapova, also saw the exit doors. She bowed out to the Australian number one, Samantha Stosur, in brutal straight sets in one hour and 53 minutes. The Russian beauty capitalised on three out of eight break chances but was broken
four times, eventually suffering a 4-6, 6-7(10) loss.
The defending champion, Agnieszka Radwanska, faced a better fortune. She dumped the former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, in straight sets to reach the last four.
The Russian veteran, Nadia Petrova, completed the final four. She stunned sixth seeded Sara Errani in a three-set thriller to advance.
