Second seed Maria Sharapova and the sixth seed, Sara Errani, bowed out to their respective opponents at the Toray Pan Pacific 2012 on Thursday. In addition to this, the top seed Victoria Azarenka pulled out form the competition. Agnieszka Radwanska, who
is seeded third at this event, was the only higher seed that stole the show and progressed into the semi-finals.
The Russian number one, Sharapova was crashed out by the eighth seed, Samantha Stosur in brutal straight sets. She suffered a 4-6, 6-7(10) loss at the hands of the former US Open titlist.
"I lost nine points in a row from 5-3 up in the second set, but I knew I had to turn it around and not let that continue," the Australian number one said in her on-court interview. "I had a good start in the tie-break and it really helped me forget about
all of that. It was a close tie-break. I had some match points – if you miss a few in a row you think about it, but I stayed positive and kept going for it, and it paid off."
Errani on the other hand made quick in-roads after pulling out the opener with a 6-3 score line. However, she swayed from her path and ultimately suffered a 6-3, 5-7, 3-6 shock at the hands of the former world number three, Nadia Petrova.
On the other half of the draw, the world number one Azarenka was forced to retire from the tournament. As a result, fifth seeded Angelique Kerber was awarded a spot in the final four at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Five event.
In the final quarter-final match, the Polish number one earned the glory after trashing Caroline Wozniacki. She was broken twice but sent home the former world number one after cashing in five out of 10 break chances.
