Anti-Terrorism Court reserves verdict against Pervez Musharraf’s assets
Saturday, September 29th, 2012 2:40:39 by Faisal FarooqAfter completion of hearing, an Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) of Rawalpindi reserved its verdict on the petition for the de-freezing of the accounts of former President General (Retd) Pervez Musharraf.
It is vital to mention here that the trial court earlier had frozen of the former ruler’s bank accounts and seized his property, declaring him absconder in the former premier Benazir Bhutto murder case.
The petitions had been filed by Musharraf’s wife, Sehba Musharraf, at the Rawalpindi branch of the ATC.
Counsel for Sehba Musharraf Ilyas Siddiqui in the course of hearing said that no inquiry had been carried out in this case.
He was of the opinion that a probe should have been done before freezing a joint account involving an accused.
However, FIA prosecutor Chaudhry Zulfiqar objected over it saying Sehba possessed no personal income and that the joint account mainly contained Pervez Musharraf’s money.
He added, “Musharraf is an absconder and no one may submit a request to restore his accounts until he himself returned to Pakistan. Out of 11 accounts that were frozen, seven were personal accounts belonging to Musharraf.”
Subsequently, the court reserved its judgment which was expected to be announced on October 3. The court also approved the submission of some more documents by the petitioner’s counsel.
In Sept 2011, Sehba had filed a petition seeking a stay on its order to confiscate the properties and freeze the accounts of her husband in the Benazir Bhutto assassination case.
She had said the orders against her husband declaring him an absconder and attachment of his properties be withdrawn or recalled and the attached property be released to the petitioner.
