Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf announces Rs 2 billion for Gilgit-Baltistan
Saturday, September 29th, 2012 10:10:25 by Faisal FarooqIn order to grapple with the wave of deadly sectarian violence in the area, Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf has announced a package of two billion rupees in the head of social-economic development funds for Gilgit-Baltistan.
The premier on Friday addressed the first joint session of the Gilgit-Baltistan Council and Legislative Assembly, asking the ministry of finance to immediately release the funds.
He was of the opinion that improvement in the financial position of the federal government will allow for allocation of more resources in the area.
He observed, “As you are aware that despite world recession and difficulties faced by the national economy, the federal government is providing financial assistance for the rehabilitation of flood affected people in Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan.”
PM Ashraf said that the progress and prosperity of the region was the top most priority of the government, assuring them of complete cooperation of the federal government. He also pointed out that he was fully familiar with the administrative and financial difficulties of the Gilgit-Baltistan.
In his view, the sectarian violence has rocked the relatively peaceful district and has directly threatened tourism in the area.
The premier added, “The elements involved in sectarian prejudice and extremism are taking advantage of the situation and are tarnishing the peaceful and secure environment for their nefarious designs.”
He, however, said that the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government was directed to ensure secure journey of passengers on this highway. He stated, “My government is particularly focusing on these issues and is taking measures to resolve them.”
Prime Minister Ashraf said it was matter of satisfaction that improvement has come in day-to-day life in the region due to sincere efforts of the government.
He further said, “We are committed to the development of Gilgit-Baltistan and we want the people of this area to get basic facilities, including health and education, as they are available in other developed areas. With the support of the people and the government of Gilgit-Baltistan, we will make it a model region.”
PM Ashraf said that there was a need to further solidify these efforts in view of the strategic importance of the area.
