Tony Martin of Team German secured the biggest victory of his 2012 season after his storming performance during the UCI Road World Championships, Elite Men Category on Wednesday.

The cyclist completed the 45.7 kilometre race in almost a minute and registered a comfortable victory over the second position holder, Taylor Phinney of Team USA.

He clocked an tremendous time of 0:58:38.80 and finished 0:00:05.37 ahead of Phinney to claim the top podium position with Vasil Kiryienka of Team Belarus, Tejay Van Garderen  of Team USA and Fredrik Carl Wilhelm Kessiakoff of Team Sweden claiming the next four positions in the respective order.

It is Martin’s second consecutive gold medal at the World Time Trial event as last year it was Bradley Wiggins who had to settle for the silver medal with Fabian Cancellara securing the bronze.

Tony was also part of the strong Team Omega Pharma-Quick Step line-up who won gold last week at Team Time Trial event and he played a vital role to support the team led by Tom Boonen.

“Just at the top of the Cauberg, I was full, full sprinting. It was the longest 1,000 metres of my career,” he said after he successfully defended the title.

“My legs were full of lactic acid, but I had to continue and when I saw the time at the finish, I saw that I was just in front”.

“At the beginning I was a little bit behind and then I was in front at the next check, but the gap was always in between 10 seconds,” Martin said. “But I didn’t panic, I just tried to follow my rhythm and stay with my plan.”

The 27-year-old’s other commendable performances in the current season in clued a stage win and an overall victory at the Tour of Belgium 2012, a second overall finish at the Volta ao Algarve and a fifth overall finish at the Tour of the Basque Country 2012.

Alberto Contador was looking good but he could not get his guts together and occupied the ninth overall position after he finished 2 minutes and 30 second behind the race leader.
