Extending his support for overseas Pakistanis’ right to vote in the country, Chairman Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has said that they always supported the dual nationals and will always stand by them.

While addressing the International Convention of the party, he observed, “We are committed to the idea that dual-nationals should be able to participate in all our country’s civic matters, and that include the right to contest elections.”

Taking credit for his party, he said that overseas remittances have increased from $6 billion in the current era of the PPP.

The country is undergoing the first peaceful transition of power in its 66-year history through a powerful and independent election commission, adding that it had been transformed from a dictatorship into a democracy.

He noted, “We have restored the supremacy of parliament, stripped our Constitution of illegal powers, usurped by military dictators and nourished a thriving civil society and restored one of the freest press in the world”.

Bilawal added that the incumbent government has passed more legislation for women in parliament than in all past parliaments combined to ensure protection of women.

He further said that this was the only government not to imprison people for their political allegiances, adding that they are implementing over the policy of reconciliation.

The party chairman was of the opinion that the country managed to have an annual GDP growth rate of almost 4% despite external and internal shocks that led to fiscal deficit.

Backing the stance of Baloch people, he said that they realized that a Baloch family loses hope in the country with every missing person.

He added, “We have stopped living in denial, and we cannot let the province bleed the way it has and taken historic measures to address the underlying causes of the challenges in Balochistan.”

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari condemned the making of the blasphemous film, saying all major political parties in the country have called for international legislation that restricts hate speech and criminalizes incitement to violence.

He was of the view that they respect the judiciary and accepts its decisions despite reservations over its rulings.

The elected government opposed the drone strikes and it will fight this war on its own terms and not at the dictation of any foreign power, he remarked.
