First round results at the China Open saw mixed results as two out of three seeds in action exited from the tournament with disappointment. The sixth seed, Alexandr Dolgopolov from Ukraine, was the one who stole the show and progressed into the second round
at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 500 Series event held in Beijing, China.
The Ukrainian number one crushed Spain’s Guillermo Garcia-Lopez with a bagel in 69 minutes. He swiped his entire serves with poise and cashed in four out of 11 break chances to steal the show.
Elsewhere, the fourth seeded Marin Cilic faced a bitter reality. He bowed out to the Romanian wild card entrant, Marius Copil, in gruelling three sets in two hours and 26 minutes. He broke his rival’s serve four times but was broken four times as well, eventually
sealing the deal with a 6-3, 6-7(0), 4-6 loss in their first outing.
The Romanian on the other hand recorded biggest win of his career. He commented in a post match press conference:
“It’s the biggest win of my career for sure. The first set was not good because I had too many emotions playing on such a big court so I struggled to focus. It was one of my first matches on such a big court. But I fought until the end and managed to take
the few chances that came my way in the second and third sets. It helps my confidence a lot. Many people play better than my ranking but I have to prove it. I’d like to thank the tournament for giving me a wild card, and hopefully I can win some more matches
to show that I deserved it.”
Seeded eighth in this tournament, Fernando Verdasco from Spain also suffered a similar fate. He was underplayed by the American contender, Sam Querrey, in three sets in almost two hours.
