Stuart Broad admits England not good enough
Tuesday, October 2nd, 2012 1:05:49 by Rana Nasir GhafoorEngland’s Twenty20 captain Stuart Broad has conceded that his team was not good enough after the defending champions crashed out of the ongoing World T20 Championship.
England’s 19-run loss at the hands of Sri Lanka paved the way for West Indies to advance to the semi-finals. Sri Lanka also moved to the next round following their three emphatic wins in the Super Eights.
Saddened by his team’s below par show throughout the tournament, Broad was not reluctant to admit that the guys missed several crucial opportunities.
"You can look at the missed opportunities. But I think throughout the whole tournament, we’ve not quite been good enough," Broad said on Monday night as his team prepared for the long journey home.
The Englishmen won the previous edition of T20 World Cup under the captaincy of Paul Collingwood. They easily made it to the Super Eights, but completely failed to continue the progress.
England only beat New Zealand in the Super Eights. On their latest outing, the Poms were thrashed by the home side. Batting first, the Lankans achieved a handsome total of 169.
England could not get off to a good start, and lost first three wickets for only 18. Lasith Malinga showed his magic with the ball, and scalped five wickets. Samit Patel showed some fight with the bat and scored 67, but his knock was enough to take the side
over the line.
"It was very disappointing to have gone out, because I believe we do have the firepower in that changing room to go far," said Broad. "It was frustratingly close."
"What you get with young guys is some days of absolute brilliance, and other days a bit of averageness," he said. "I think, as a team, we’ve probably shown that.
"It has been a learning experience for us. Obviously, we did not have enough players firing at the same time. The talent is certainly there. You see on the domestic scene that these are the guys who are performing week in and week out."
"But it’s a learning experience when you come into the international scene. We’ve got guys here who have not played a lot of international cricket. But as long as we learn from it, we will develop."
