Third seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and fifth seeded Richard Gasquet stole the limelight at the China Open, an ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 500 Series event held in Beijing, China. However, the seventh seed Tommy Haas exited to Mikhail
Youzhny in the opening round.
Seeded third in this event, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was tested in his battle against the Uzbekistani number one, Denis Istomin. He made a drastic entry at this outdoor hard court event and lost the opening set. However, the French number one made a spectacular
reply and pulled out the equaliser with a breadstick. He maintained consistency in his game and eventually carved out the victory after dominating the third set tie-breaker. Tsonga jolted down a 4-6, 6-1, 7-6(3) score line against the Uzbek in almost two hours.
"It was not easy, because I played a good player in the first round; it was not easy to get used to the conditions," said the jubilant Frenchman in a post match press conference. "Point after point I played better and better during the match. It’s some points
for me to maybe have a chance to play the last eight at the end of the year. So for me it’s really important to win and continue to win."
The fifth seed, Gasquet, also earned the glory later that day. He nudged up a 6-2, 6-4 success against the Australian qualifier, Matthew Ebden, in one hour and 21 minutes.
The former world number two, Haas, faced a bitter reality as he bowed out to the Russian star, Mikhail Youzhny in gruelling three sets. He cashed in two out of 10 break chances but was broken four times, eventually suffering a 4-6, 6-4, 2-6 loss in two hours
and 23 minutes.
