Government decides to reestablish contact with Baloch people
Thursday, October 4th, 2012 10:46:18 by Faisal FarooqIn an effort to stabilize the situation in insurgency-hit Balochistan, the government has decided to restore lines of communication with estranged Baloch leaders.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf held a one-on-one meeting in Karachi, discussing host of issues including law and order situation in Balochistan, NRO case and Thar coal energy project.
The president, who arrived in the country after attending the UN General Assembly session in New York, was updated on the current political situation with particular reference to Balochistan and the energy crisis in the country.
The premier briefed the president in detail about matters relating to the issue of writing a letter to the Swiss authorities and a draft that would be presented in Supreme Court.
Presidential spokesperson Senator Farhatullah Babar said the president briefed the premier about his visit to New York where he raised the issue of the anti-Islam film at the 67thannual session of the UN General Assembly.
The president also apprised the prime minister of his meetings with world leaders on the sidelines of the session.
According to Babar, the prime minister briefed the president on the situation in Balochistan, the current energy and law and order situation among other issues.
Besides holding one-on-one meeting with premier, President Zardari chaired a high level meeting in Bilawal House.
According to the reports, the meeting decided to immediately form a committee to start dialogue with Baloch leader which will work under the direct supervision of the prime minister.
The committee will comprise Balochistan’s governor and senior members of the federal Cabinet.
The committee was given one-month deadline to finalize its recommendations over the issue.
Besides preparing a report, it will expedite the development process in the volatile province and provide special funds to solve basic problems faced by the people of Balochistan.
The reports quoting sources said that the meeting discussed the draft of the Swiss letter, which is to be written and presented by Naek before the Supreme Court on October 5.
