Top seed Novak Djokovic from Serbia stayed on track whereas the second seed, David Ferrer, withdrew from the China Open, an ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 500 Series event held in Beijing, China. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Richard Gasquet
were the only other seeds that advanced into the second round on day two of Men’s draw.
The former world number one, Djokovic made quick in-roads at the National Tennis Center. He quickly pulled out the opener with a breadstick against the German qualifier, Michael Berrer. However, he stepped off steam in the following set tie-breaker and eventually
levelled the set scores. The Serbian ace recreated his magic in the final set and ultimately carved out the victory with a 6-1, 6-7(3), 6-2 score line.
Djokovic was quoted in a courtside interview after conquering the qualifier:
"In the first set I felt that I could return a lot of serves, which I did, and played a really good set. Then I had a couple of break points in the first game of the second. He stayed with some big serves. That’s when I think he changed his tactics and his
service games. He started mixing it up more, and I had tough time reading it. I made little adjustment on the return, came closer to the line, and it paid off."
The world number five, Ferrer made a powerful entry at this outdoor hard court event. He drew the first blood and jumped to a 4-2 lead. However, he swayed from his path and lost the following three games. After trailing at 4-5, the Spanish number two was
forced to pull out from the tournament with a stomach virus.
