The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Monday directed the government to deploy the newly-appointed police officers in Balochistan, the insurgency-hit region of the country.

A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry resumed hearing of the petition filed by the Balochistan Bar Association on the law and order situation in Pakistan’s largest province.

In the course of hearing, the chief justice said that the authorities should post the newly-appointed police officers in restive regions of the province.

During the hearing, the chief justice said that the Balochistan was the most important issue of the country, adding that government was not serious to improve the situation in the province.

The CJ said that situation will be improved in 95 percent area of the province if police control remaining five percent of area.

Advocate General informed the court that the boy who was abducted from Pishin has been recovered.

Upon which, Justice Jawwad S Khawaja said that the chief secretary had already shared the information about that.

The chief justice asked him if there was any decline in the target killing and kidnapping incidents throughout the province since the last hearing. He also asked him how many police officers came to Balochistan after their hiring.

In reply to this, Inspector General Balochistan Police Tariq Omar Khitab informed the court that 30 police officers had arrived in the province on court’s orders.

The chief justice asked that why those 30 police and District Management Group (DMG) officers were not posted in the restive regions and what the police was doing about the situation.

To this, the IG said that a summary in this regard had been submitted to Chief Secretary Balochistan Babar Yaqoob Fateh Muhammad.

Upon which, Chief Justice Chaudhry said the law and order situation in the province’s Pashtun-dominated areas was better and gave instructions for the newly-appointed police officers to be posted in Balochistan’s restless areas.

He expressed astonishment over the fact that several of the officers belonging to Balochistan had never served in the province even for a day. The bench will be hearing the case daily until October 12th.
