West Indians clinch ICC T20 Word Cup
Monday, October 8th, 2012 10:21:39 by Faisal FarooqMarlon Samuels played a brilliant all-round game, guiding the West Indian to a 36-run victory over Sri Lanka in the World Twenty20 cricket final on Sunday.
West Indies’ victory is an important moment for world cricket as the former cricket powerhouse finally added another major trophy to their cabinet.
West India skipper Darren Sammy while speaking to media said, “This moment we’re going to live forever. The mission was to win the Twenty20 World Cup and the belief when we left the Caribbean has pulled us through. Today we were down and out, but our never-say-die attitude came out.”
He added, “From Jamaica to Guyana the party must have started. And I tell you we know how to party. I am sure they will need a lot of bartenders out there tonight.”
Batting first, West Indies made 137 for six wickets from its 20 overs and then returned to skittle out the hosts for 101 runs in 18.4 overs.
A sell-out crowd of 35,000 at the Premadasa stadium cheered every dismissal as the West Indies, electing to bat, fell apart once Chris Gayle was removed in the sixth over for only three runs.
In one of the most unique celebrations a team must have indulged in after winning a tournament, the entire West Indies cricket team jived away ‘Gangnam Style’.
Fittingly, it was birthday boy Darren Bravo who prompted the celebrations after catching Lasith Malinga on the boundary to end the Sri Lankan innings on 101 runs. Arms aloft, he was joined by his teammates and coaching staff, sprinting onto the pitch from the sidelines, for the celebrations, which will go long into the night and beyond.
It was also West Indies’ second International Cricket Council (ICC) title in eight years, having won the Champions Trophy in 2004. West Indies last won a World Cup – 50 overs format – way back in 1979.
