Attack on Malala Yousufzai pours worldwide condemnation
Thursday, October 11th, 2012 10:39:57 by Faisal FarooqTerming it a cowardice attack, leaders from across the globe voiced their outrage and strongest condemnation over the shooting of Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani peace-activist.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, US President Barrack Obama, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and UK’s Foreign Office Minister Baroness Warsi condemned the attack on Pakistani peace-activist.
A statement issued by his Ban’s spokesperson said, “The Secretary-General, like many around the world, has been deeply moved by Malala Yousufzai’s courageous efforts to promote the fundamental right to education, enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.”
It further stated, “The Secretary-General is hoping for Malala Yousufzai’s full and speedy recovery and extends his heartfelt sympathies to her family at this very difficult time. He similarly expresses his sympathies to the families of the other two girls wounded in this attack.”
In another statement issued by the White House, President Barack Obama described the shooting incident as reprehensible, disgusting and tragic.
White House spokesperson Jay Carney relayed President Obama’s sentiments saying that the United States has offered any necessary assistance to Malala.
He noted, “As part of this offer, the US military has agreed to provide air ambulance and medical treatment at a facility suitable for her condition if it becomes necessary.”
He further stated that the US has strongly condemned the shooting, adding that violence at children is barbaric and cowardly.
Earlier, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said that Malala was attacked by extremists who do not want girls to have an education or speak for themselves.
Speaking at an event to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouts at the State Department on Wednesday, Secretary Clinton said that Malala has been very brave in standing up for the rights of girls in the area she belongs to.
Sayeeda Warsi also condemned the attack on Malala Yousufzai, saying that Malala’s inspirational activism has bravely highlighted the need for education to be accessible to all children in Pakistan.
She noted, “Our thoughts and prayers go to Malala and her friends and family, and to the people of Pakistan who have suffered so much from terrorism. They will always have our sympathy, our understanding, and our robust support in confronting terrorism and supporting education for all in Pakistan.”
In a statement released by the French embassy in Islamabad on Wednesday, the murder attempt on Malala was condemned. “Attempt against a defenseless girl illustrates the cowardice and cruelty of the Taliban, who have claimed responsibility of the attack”, it added.
